Virtual Regents’ Cup celebrates free speech, civil discourse at ϲͼ public universities

WHAT: The Regents’ Cup debate competition celebrating free speech, civil discourse and democratic engagement among students from all of ϲͼ’s public universities will take place as a virtual event April 24.

The public can watch the 2021 Regents’ Cup competition

Students participating in the Regents’ Cup will compete in the debate-style competition during an event illustrating the commitment of the universities to upholding the intrinsic rights of all students to freedom of speech.

This tri-university competition features student team members engaging in debate and speech events. Participants in the Regents’ Cup compete for scholarships to advance their education at the universities.

ϲͼ’s public universities are recognized as exemplars in free speech; ϲͼ State University, Northern ϲͼ University and the University of ϲͼ are all recognized with the highest “ from FIRE (the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education).

WHO: Students from ϲͼ’s public universities will participate in the day-long Regents’ Cup. Judges for the event include leading figures from government, industry and academia.

WHEN: Saturday, April 24, 2021 

8 to 8:30 a.m. 

Opening remarks 

9 to 10 a.m.  First round, Oxford debate 
9 to 10:15 a.m.  First round, persuasive storytelling
10:30 to 11:30 a.m.  Second round, Oxford debate 
11 a.m. to 12:15 a.m. 

Second round, persuasive storytelling

12:30 to 1 p.m. 

Keynote address, Keith Whittington, professor of politics, Princeton University, author “Speak Freely: Why Universities Must Defend Free Speech;” Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) President and CEO Robert Schibley 

1:30 to 2:30 p.m. 

Quarterfinals

3:30 to 4:30 p.m.
